Experience Nature's Gifts: Rainchild Apothecary's Small-Batch, Sustainable Skincare

Can you tell me about your first experience with your craft?

My first experience making natural skincare products was growing up in a resourceful and creative family that valued nature and its gifts. We made plant-based healing salves, lip balms, facial masques, and hair gel, free from harsh synthetic chemicals and fragrances. I made skincare and bath/body products throughout my life, eventually leading me to start a business!

What inspired you to start your business? When did you start it?

I started Rainchild Apothecary 5 years ago, in 2018. I was inspired to start Rainchild Apothecary for a couple of reasons. One, I love skincare products! (I always have an excessive amount of lip balms and moisturizers going simultaneously.) Secondly, as someone with skin concerns, I needed a natural skincare line that was not only effective at healing my skin but also comforting and felt like a hug. I wanted my products to turn skin care into self-care. I was inspired to share with others, and I continue encouraging people to participate actively in their skincare/self-care/healing. Our skin absorbs what we put on it, and I want your skin to absorb natural, ethically-sourced, healthy, effective ingredients and the positive intentions you set as you prepare for your day!

What is unique about your production process? Can you describe some of it for us?

I make my products in small batches, use natural and organic ingredients, and package almost everything in reusable/recyclable glass containers. All my products are original paraben-free, petroleum-free, and cruelty-free recipes. I'm also an esthetician! I use my experience and knowledge to formulate healthy products that will help nourish your skin.

Do you have a product that you are most proud of?

I'm proud of the Rainchild Cleansing Dough and the Rainchild Repair Balm. Rainchild Cleansing Dough is a unique facial exfoliant that gently polishes off dead skin cells and pulls out dirt and impurities without stripping the skin of moisture.

I'm proud of the Rainchild Repair Balm because the production process involves infusing plant-based oils with herbs beneficial for the skin and using the infusions in the final product. It's a process that yields a reparative and wholesome herbal moisturizer!

What product do you want more people to try?

I want more people to try the Rose & Nettle Toner with (any) face oil combination! The Rose & Nettle Toner is an excellent prep for a moisturizer - it's light and refreshing and helps the Face Oil apply and absorb better. I use A.B.C Face Oil, and when it's applied over the toner, it soaks in wonderfully, isn't heavy or greasy, and leaves my skin soft and fresh all day. No matter the skin type, face oils can be beneficial.

How do you recommend people incorporate using your product into their lives?

A skincare routine doesn't have to be a million steps or take a long time. I recommend people come by, talk to me, ask questions, and try some testers. Rainchild Apothecary products are easy to incorporate into your life because they are appropriate for different skin types, are easy to use, and encourage you to be present and active in your skincare. I want something as mundane as washing one's face to become a moment of self-care and an opportunity to be present.

Do your source any of your product materials from local businesses? Which ones?

I source many of my materials from companies in Washington. All the suppliers I use are in the United States. The herbs/plants I don't grow or wildcraft, I source from Kindred Moon Apothecary, located in downtown Olympia.

Is there anything special you want to promote this year?

I want to promote healthy skin for everyone with skin! Anyone can care for their skin regardless of age, gender, or skin type. Come talk to me!

Also, if you are into baths, try the Bubble Bombs—they are so luxurious! I make new scents every week because they are so fun to make.

Is your business celebrating any big milestones this year?

Rainchild Apothecary just turned five years old this month (April)! I'm so excited and appreciative! I am releasing new products throughout this year. The first one is coming soon, so follow Rainchild Apothecary on Facebook and Instagram.
